Holocaust Memorial

Atlantic City, NJ, USA

This is a non-accusatory memorial. It is a memorial to humanity, to its gross failure and infinite hope. It is a public space, spatial without formally enclosing, both open and closed.

A series of slender bronze trunks are distributed throughout, and beyond, site. Forming a field of floating points. Each trunk rises to 37.5’, unable to stand alone each one is supported by and supports adjacent trunks through a series of bronze branches, all 4” in diameter. These branches form a canopy, together they form a forest. A simply sloping timber deck forms the forest floor, discreetly falling from boardwalk level to sand level. The gentle slope allows people to filter through while viewing the canopy above, or sit and rest.
