WINNER
1,000 Houses, Community Centre, Bus Terminus, Allotments & Associated Infrastructure
EUROPAN is a biennial, open and international architectural competition for architects under 40 across 62 sites in 19 European cities. Its objective is to bring to the fore Europe’s young architecture and urban design professionals, and to publicise and develop their ideas. The Galway site is on the extreme western boundary of the City. The study site was 36 Hectare's whilst the site owned by Galway City was 3 Hectares dividing the centre of the study scheme. The brief required a master plan for the entire area and a detailed plan for the site in the ownership of Galway City.
Jury’s Citation
The candidate has given a very good analysis of the site, urban design and house types. There is a strong sense of place in the proposed scheme, the public realm is relaxed and informal, the dwellings are varied in plan and section with strategically located outbuildings establishing opportunities to create communal areas with play spaces and shared facilities for social interaction. The orientation and arrangement of the housing creates a pattern of sustainability in the built environment at the edge of the city.
