House Addition, Dublin 6, IE

An existing house has recently been refurbished, but there remains a disproportionate and distant relationship between the cooking/ dining/ living spaces and the bedrooms.

The proposed addition is suspended off the original structure at a midway position between the attic and the basement. A prefabricated shell, it contains a pair of bedrooms and a guest WC.

Preformed and highly insulated, the carapace is lined in perforated steel, a play between its precise industrialised origin and a random patterned playfulness. Its underbelly provides a sheltered space for general storage. It is positioned to avoid blocking evening light currently enjoyed in the main dining/living spaces and the maturing garden below is left untouched.
