Restaurant refurbishment, Galway, IE
This is a proposal to refurbish a central university campus restaurant through a series of simple interventions and sensitive restoration; it seeks to address the ad-hoc erosion of the original campus identity and sets about to reposition the restaurant as the true social centre of gravity of the campus.
A pair of new light scoops enclose an existing external stairwell leading to the restaurant from a podium/ main concourse and an open restaurant courtyard. These enclosures provide shelter while admitting varying sunlight, throughout the day, deep into the restaurant plan. The existing restaurant is to be stripped of all current fit-out, the original materials and proportions will be exposed as design artefacts and will set the backdrop for the new restaurant concept; BIA LINN.
